2cupsdiced or grated Chinese turnip (~ lb.)
2cupschicken broth
1/3cupdried shrimp
cupBBQ pork or cooked ham (~ lb.)
cupChinese sausage
2tbspminced salted turnip (opt.)
cupchopped green onions
cupchopped Chinese parsley (cilantro)
2cupsrice or all-purpose flour
  1. Soak dried shrimp for 1 hour, then finely dice after draining. Bring turnip, 2 tbsp oil, and cup chicken broth to a boil and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until turnip is soft. Do not drain liquid.
  2. Heat wok and add 2 tbsp. oil and stir fry diced shrimp for 1 min, then add diced pork, salted turnips, salt, and 1/3 cup each of the green onions and Chinese parsley. Set aside.
  3. Mix flour with 1 cup of chicken broth until smooth. Add stir fried mixture and the boiled turnip, including the remaining liquid in the pot. Mix well. Pour mixture into a 9" round cake pan.
  4. Set pan over steam rack in wok. Cover. Bring water to a boil and turn heat to simmer. Steam for hour or longer until cake is set. Sprinkle remaining green onion and parsley over cake. Cool for at least hour before cutting.

6 servings

  • Can be made ahead and frozen. Reheat by thawing first, then cut in thin slices. Brown both sides in a little oil until outside is crunchy. Serve with light soy sauce mixed with a little hot sauce.
